En 1516 Erasmo de Roterdam publicaba una obra de su amigo Tomás Moro. Se trataba de un retrato mordaz de la Europa renacentista, al que acompañaba, por contraste la descripción de un lugar ideal: Utopía, isla remota del Nuevo Mundo gobernada con mesura y en donde todos los habitantes vivían en armonía.
Lo que el humanista inglés concibió com " librito entretenido" y fantasioso, sin embargo, acabo superando con creces su marco narrativo. Aquella crítica al orden social establecido, que traspasó tiempos y fronteras hasta dar lugar incluso a un nuevo término: nuestra "UTOPÍA"
